the in box at the NCAA is starting to fill up with all the stench created by western washington university. i have followed the game for more than a quarter century and never in my or anybody else's memory can anyone recall requiring all of the winning visiting teams to either commute from 90 minutes away or relocate their hotel rooms in the middle of the regional. it's one thing to have the advantage of being the host school by sleeping in your own beds but forcing everybody else to long commutes or being displaced twice is way out of order. now we have an "uncle bob" ref in the mix too? wow. and the academics have started an official inquiry with the NCAA about why WWU forced everyone to miss so much school as well....what a mess. severe sanctions should be forthcoming for sure.

but when you say assigned to guard the other team's best player that's not how the leading defense in the nation works. rather, the broncos play a match-up zone, which means barry might be on the side of a john allen sometimes but not other times. this sophisticated defense is part man and part zone and it is very rarely employed in D2 basketball.

on campus regionals in small towns are difficult enough. i checked for hotel rooms in bellingham and the choice is between motel 6 with paper thin walls allowing for no sleep or a queen bed SMOKING room at the seedy bellingham inn. it is high time we go to an arena setting like citizens business bank arena locally, the tacoma dome, or the stockton arena. stop this nonsense now!

Absolutely insane-Western Washington is operating with dollar signs in their eyes instead of being good hosts.I agree with the writer,this region needed to either be split into sub-regionals or assign a regional to another school.Although realistically which regional would WWU give back? The Women's because it is less likely to produce a profit or break even.Its absolute madness and hopefully a by-law change will be made as a result of this.

Thanks Michelle for writing this article. It's clear that the NCAA has lost sight of its constituents... college students. We're not made of money, wasting money on tournaments is nonsense. As much as I love collegiate athletics, I can't justify this burn in money. Even more, these student athletes are sacrificing their grades! Our finals week starts Monday! How are our fatigued students supposed to succeed with this excess in travel? okay, yes, no game on Sunday, but what coach won't take that time to train athletes? Even without practice, what athlete is going to have that focus to study away from home?

Shit's a joke. Stop this privilage bullshit.

Agree with the fact one school should not host 2 regionals for the simple fact of a scheduling nightmare. Shame on the NCAA for not dealing with this sooner since both western washington teams have been at the top most of the season and the NCAA knew this would be an issue. The sub-regionals would also have been a good solution. One other possible solution would have been to hold one of the regional's in Seattle then the hotel issue wouldn't have been a problem. This is a PR nightmare for the NCAA.

this is the greatest travesty in NCAA D2 in more than a decade. both the NCAA and WWU should be ashamed of themselves. this highjacking of both regionals could prompt a class action suit. can anyone imagine what a court injunction might do to shake up the old ways and archaic system extant? michelle, you get to the heart of the issue. there is blood all over the execs in indy as well as bellingham.

Glad you got to experience it. It's the greatest rivalry in college sports. The basketball games are a hidden gem. Everyone should go at least once. The ones at Claremont are a little bit more wild because of the small building. The Pomona Gym is bigger and more open so it doesn't get as crazy. Not sure how the new Claremont Gym will effect the atmosphere.

Also, I was really impressed with the level of play by both teams this year. Extremely good guard play on both sides.
